Our research shows that students feel safe and empowered to thrive when they feel safe and develop in positive school climates that support their mental, emotional, and social well-being. Our students suffer from all types of issues at home and out of school. We decided that we needed to establish an area for our students to be able to release and let go of the negative thoughts and issues that arose from their homes. We have implemented a Mental Health Zen Room, a space where they can isolate themselves from the distractions and negative emotional triggers of the outside world. Dr. Martin, Nicole Backlund, and Danielle Grady implemented the action for the students and staff. Through yoga poses and breathing exercises, Ms. Backlund showed the students different ways to release tension. Ms. Grady provided ideas for getting Positive Men and Women coloring books, daily planners, journals, and meditation and calming music. Dr. Martin, provided us with the appropriate safe space to be able to release and let go of any tension that might arise throughout the day.
Our students and staff can utilize the Zen Room when a teacher/adult is there to provide the services. Dr. Martin was able to provide us with a safe space to use for our project. Our school and community will benefit from this room, by bringing home the lesson and information that was provided to them. Changes were also made to our curriculum to be able to utilize the rooms and the service.
You can see a 10% increase in the students’ responses to the information provided. 15% of the students say they enjoyed their time in the zen room. They liked how they could discuss things they wouldn’t do anywhere else. They felt safe and comfortable, and that was the motivation for this action!
